If you don’t know me in real life (IRL) you may not know how much I need coffee for basic function and happiness. I’m especially grumpy if I am awakened earlier than planned, even if I workout in the morning, the last thing I want to do before coffee is hold a conversation.
My morning routine starts with a protein shake, instead of water, I use cold brew coffee as the base. I’ve been making cold brew with Trader Joe’s French Vanilla coffee, except it’s been sold out the last couple times I’ve gone grocery shopping.
This weekend, I decided to use Intelligentsia’s El Diablo dark roast. It’s super easy to make and you don’t need a fancy cold brew system unless you have extra money to spend and lots of room in your kitchen.
All you need is a nut milk bag and a pitcher. I didn’t have a pitcher so I used a 32 oz glass jar with the nut milk bag. Since that wasn’t going to be enough coffee, I put a tablespoon of the freshly ground coffee into a 12 oz mason jar, then filled each of the containers with water.
For the coffee in the mason jar which had the loose coffee grounds, pour the cold brew through a coffee filter into clean mason jars with lids. I usually have 1/2 cup (or 4 oz) servings of cold brew in mason jars with 4 oz of almond milk. Put the lid on the mason jar and store in the fridge. During the early morning rush, I dump the mixture into my shaker cup to mix with the cold brew with protein powder.
Ingredients
